The B.O.S.S. Sprints are Coming to Michaels Mercer Raceway on June 29
(Mercer, PA June 25, 2019): This Saturday, June 29, Michaels Mercer Raceway will welcome back the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series. Formed in 2011, B.O.S.S. tour brings traditional Sprint Cars–that is, without wings–to venues throughout Ohio and into the neighboring areas of Indiana and Pennsylvania. The show this week will be the second half of a Pennsylvania double header, as the Sprints will back ’em in on Friday at Lernerville Speedway.
The B.O.S.S. tour has been plagued by wet weather so far in 2019, completing only three of ten races on the docket. Logging wins were Matt Westfall, on April 13 at Atomic Speedway (Waverly, OH); Nick Bilbee, on May 18 at Lawrenceburg Speedway (Lawrenceburg, IN); and Luke Hall, on June 7 at Moler Raceway Park (Williamsburg, OH). These racers, and many more, will be primed and ready to go this weekend.
Dallas Hewitt leads the standings for the B.O.S.S. tour. He has a 25 point advantage over Matt Westfall, and a 45 point margin over Dustin Ingle. Justin Owens and Mike Fischesser round out the top five. Cody Gardner, Dustin Webber, Cory Crabtree, Mike Miller, and Steve Little are also expected to make the journey east.
Who will be there to defend the home turf? The most likely candidate will be Brandon Spithaler, from nearby Evans City. Spithaler is equally adept at racing with and without the wings, and he has wins both ways at Mercer already in his career. Jack Sodeman, Jr., from North Jackson, OH, is another Mercer veteran who has victories with and without wings to his credit. Bob McMillin and Joe Butera, both hailing from Wampum, PA, are pilots who have many laps around the tricky oval with and without the extra metal overhead.
This will be the first appearance at the track for any Sprints with the powerful 410 engines under their hoods. You won’t want to miss them!
Joining the B.O.S.S. Sprints will be the Turn 4 Toilets Fastrak Limited Modifieds. Brian Sadler picked up his first career win in that division last weekend, and he would like nothing more than to make another appearance in Victory Lane. But racers like Brian Schaffer and Shayne Izzo, who are now tied atop the championship standings, may have something to say about that. Likewise, prior winners Steve Slater, Erik Martin, and Garrett Krummert will be challenging for the win. Over a dozen more drivers are expected as well.
The Barris Trucking Modified Lites will be on the card, along with the Dwarf Cars. Vivian Jones picked up her second win last week, holding off her father, Rod, to claim the victory. That propelled her into second place in the points, just eight counters behind Shane Webb. Rod Jones, Dusty Frantz, and Teddy Williams round out the top five, but they could climb up the rankings with a little luck.
The Mini Stocks, presented by Ray’s Racing Collectibles and Eperthener’s Auto Wrecking, will go to the post. Shane Shook now has a pair of wins to his credit, and he is tied for fourth in the points with Mike Porterfield. Joe Campbell leads the way, with Steve Longwell, Sr., and Johnny Bruce sandwiched in between. Big fields have been providing fans with thrills and spills.
Last but not least, the 270 Micro Sprints and the Junior Sprints will be in action. They made their first appearances of the season during the Little Guys’ Summer Spectacular. These smaller scale Sprints provide plenty of action on the the Mercer oval.
The Pit gates will open at 4 p.m., and the spectator gates will open at 5 p.m. The practice sessions will begin at 6:30 and heat racing will commence at 7 P.m.
For this special event, adults will be admitted for $15, and seniors (60+) will be admitted for $13. Children (13 and under) will be admitted for free if they are in the company of a paying patron. The Pit Passes will be $35, except those for seniors (60+) and children (10 and under), all of whom will be admitted for $30.
Remember that there will be no racing at Michaels Mercer Raceway over the July 4 holiday weekend. However, the time will be spent getting ready for the big Sprint Car double header on July 12-13 courtesy of Buddy Barris Trucking. The Racesaver 305 Sprint Cars, offered by Hards Welding and Fabrication and River Valley Butcher Block, will be the headline act on Friday, and the 410 Winged Sprints will take center stage on Saturday night. Other classes will be in action, with details coming soon.
