By Jim Balentine 410 sprints return to Mercer Saturday, August 1 for $2000 to win unsanctioned event plus Big block Modifieds; 305 sprints; FASTRAK modifieds; and mini stocks. Mercer, Pa. Michaels Mercer Raceway will try to get its third night of racing in the books with the second appearance of the 410 sprint cars in three weeks for an unsanctioned $2000 to win event. Also in the card will be our big block modifieds; 305 sprints; FASTRAK modifieds and mini stocks the Mod lites will have the night off to attend a special elsewhere. The 410 sprints ,which at one time were the main stay at Mercer, will be back for a special $2000 to win show and will do the pill draw for their starting positions in the heat races and then will redraw the top eight at the flagstand to determine they’re starting positions in the unsanctioned event. Adam Kekich has gone two for two in the special 410 sprint shows winning last year’s western Pennsylvania sprint car championship and then winning the first annual Ralph Quarterson memorial on July 18 2020. It will not be an easy task as still have the likes of his good friend Brandon Spithaler who has won 2 at tri city to contend with as well as 4 time track champion Jack Sodeman Jr who has a Lernerville won, and Carl Bowser who has won at tri city this season. Also the possibility of some central Ohio cars might make a trip across the border for the event to compete for the money.0 In the 305 sprints this season we have had two different winners as last year track champion Jake Gamola picked up the win this past Saturday night and Chase Matheney who won his first ever 305 sprint race at Mercer last week. Last years 2nd place point man Kyle Colwell is looking for his 1st win of 2020. In the FASTRAK modifieds it has been all Eric Gabany as this year racing for car owner Jerry Schaeffer has gone 2 for 2 defeating his fellow drivers Garrett Krummert and Jim Bryce. Jordan Ehrenberg had his best run ever finishing 2nd last week and last year point champ Brian Schaffer has had finishes of 3rd and 8th last week. And the big block modifieds you could sing the tune of “New York New York” as both feature wins have come by drivers residing from the Empire State. Phil Vigneri of Elba, NY held off the charges of Brad Rapp to win the Ralph Quarterson memorial modified portion of opening night and Erick Rudolph from Ransomville , NY pulled away from Dave Murdick to win last week. The Ohio/Pa drivers are 0-2 including last years champ Rex King Sr who has yet to crack the top 5. The mighty Mercer mini stocks again have put on quite a show for the fans this year with a lot of excitement with both crashes and tight racing. The all-time leading feature winner in the class Tim Callahan picked up the opening night win defeating Will Aley and Mike Porterfield defeated Andy Thompson by .237 this past Saturday night! Last year’s track champ Joe Campbell has had nothing but trouble getting involved in skirmishes on the speedway And newcomer Leonard Baker Jr has had 2 surprising top 10 finishes this season. Pit gates will open Saturday at 4 PM; the grandstands at 5; sprint car hot laps at 6:30 ;and the first green flag at 7 PM. General admission will be $17 for the special event $15 for seniors 60 and over ; pit passes will be $30 and $25 for seniors 60 and over.
